Green Schools

Green Schools is a project run in conjunction with An Taisce which encourages the cultivation of environmental awareness and care amongst the school population and wider community.
The green flags that Loughquittane N.S have been awarded are;

  1. Litter and Waste
  2. Energy
  3. Water
  4. Transport
  5. Biodiversity

Loughquittane National School has recently been awarded its 5th green flag for Transport.
The green flags are awarded to schools for raising the awareness of the pupils and the wider community, through projects and curriculum work, of the need to conserve the planet’s energy and resources, and highlighting practical steps that can be taken to achieve this aim.
The Green School Committee is entrusted with coordinating this process throughout the school, and its membership includes Teachers, pupils and parents.
Action days are a very important part of acquiring these flags. In the past two years we have had Walk to School Wednesdays, Mountain Climbs and a walk in the national park, as well as competitions on road and cycling safety.
Examples of Curricular Topics that have been explored in acquiring the 4 flags to date are;

The History of Transport
Transport Modes
Car pooling
Transport for a healthy lifestyle; cycling and walking
Future Flags
The School will commence the process of acquiring its 6th flag, which is awarded for work on Global Citizenship in the next 2 academic years.
Well done to all involved and keep up the good work!
