As part of our Active Flag application, everyone strived to be more active every day in school. We had great fun during the year and are lucky to have the option so many different activities presented to us in our daily school life. These include football, basketball and sports after school as well as coaches coming into us during the year to do football, hurling, rugby and golf to name but a few. Each room also travelled to the Aquila Club in the nearby Gleneagle Hotel for a 6 week block of swimming lessons which was eagerly anticipated by all children in the school. We are extremely fortunate to have this tremendous resource available to us in our school.

We realise and really appreciate the importance of being active as part of a healthy lifestyle. This year as part of the initiative we used the ‘Go-Noodle’ programme, which ensured that even on days of inclement weather, when we could not go outside to play, we still enjoyed an active break indoors. Also, after school sports each Wednesday proved a huge success as the emphasis here was on enjoyment and participation as opposed to competition, and we got to try out many new sports in a fun environment.

We entered school teams in numerous football, basketball and soccer tournaments and even picked up a few trophies along the way!! We also tried some completely new sports this year which included hurling and pilates.

As part of the Active Flag process, we also had a sports week, where each day for a full week learning was made as active as possible for the children, culminating in a Sports Day on the Friday.  Everybody really enjoyed this and it was great to bring the classroom outdoors for active learning.

Our Active Flag committee deserves great credit for all their work this year and we intend to use this as a stepping stone to making our school even more active in the coming years!

School Partnerships

This year we were very fortunate to enter into partnerships with some local sporting organisations to improve the level of delivery in our school. County Board Football GDA, Mr. Vince Cooper continued his work in the school visiting every second week to coach the children in Gaelic Football. We also enlisted the help of Ms. Emer O neill from Basketball Ireland who came in and provided coaching in basketball each week. In a effort to introduce the children to a new sport, we entered an arrangement with St Pats East Kerry who very generously provided us with hurling equipment this year so we could introduce hurling under the guidance of Ms. McEnery who joined our staff this year. County Board Hurling GDA Mr. Colm O Brien also began to visit the school to help with the introduction of hurling. We are very lucky to have such wonderful people visiting our school to help us with our sporting pursuits.
